I feel knowledge is the most important resource we have, especially when this knowledge is about the world we live in and the people we live with. Educating ourselves and understanding other peoples perspective from around the world is essential, for us to grow together as a global society. Unalaska, NOT Dutch Harbor

Saturday, October 1, 2011 Posted by Colin

I recently traveled to Unalaska, or better known as Dutch Harbor, made famous by the Deadliest Catch TV series on the Discovery channel.  It was made VERY clear to me by my host, a member of the Unalaska City council, that it’s the city of Unalaska, on the island of Unalaska.  Dutch Harbor is just a small harbor in the city borders of Unalaska.  In any case here are some of my photos from the trip.

Tenakee Springs

Sunday, April 17, 2011 Posted by Colin

This past week I was fortunate to travel to a location I didn’t know about previously, Tenakee Springs.  From what I learned while I was there, many of the people living in Tenakee Springs, like it that way; that is people not knowing about Tenakee Springs.  Now that I have been there I can totally understand, it’s a little slice of heaven.

Portage Lake Hike

Saturday, March 26, 2011 Posted by Colin

What’s that you say, hike a lake? You must mean hike along or around the perimeter surely. Remember this is Alaska the land of extremes. In the summer Portage Lake is a popular tourist destination. There is a boat that goes from the visitor center to the other end of the lake where Portage Glacier meets the water.

In the winter the lake freezes several feet thick allowing winter warriors to hike across the lake. It is quite exhilarating walking along a frozen lake, listening to the ice crack beneath your feet. But the journey is worth it, having lunch under the majestic beauty of Portage Glacier. Mind you, it’s best not to get too close as large chucks of ice don’t feel so good when they hit you in the head.
